SOFIPA

funding gap emerging markets

The southeast of Mexico has historically been the region with the greatest lag in the country. This region presents the highest rates of marginalization, derived from a great lag in education, infrastructure, and basic services, which greatly limits its development.

Financial inclusion is another of the major problems that afflict this region of the country, derived from a scarce offer of "specialized financial services for low-income people." It is, thus, how, taking into account this context, SOFIPA emerged in February 2004, seeking to be part of the solution for the region’s development and to address the lag in financial inclusion of the unbanked sector.

SOFIPA started operations under the legal figure of the Cooperative Society. However, in search of being more competitive and innovative, in 2016, they decided to adopt the legal formation of an Investment Promotion Company, SOFOM, ENR.

About Mexico

Mexico is a federal republic consisting of 31 states and Mexico City, one of the biggest cities in the world. Spanish is the most widely spoken language in the country and approximately 10 percent of the population speaks an indigenous language. In 2020, Mexico’s economic growth was -8.5% with a strong impact from COVID. Its economy is now recovering with +3% in Q4’20 and +3% to +5% anticipated in 2021. Its most important agricultural export product is corn (4th biggest exporter in the world). The welfare of the people, however, is unevenly distributed; the top 20% earns 55% of the total income and almost one-fifth of the population lives below the poverty line.
