The performance of agricultural sectors in Tamil Nadu has been impressive since various improved crop varieties were introduced. The district of Thiruvarur is situated at the tail end of the Cauvery Delta and it is also a coastal district.   Here, most of the crop production is only from paddy and in comparison, and the income from agriculture is low in comparison with other occupations.  The average monthly income of such families is less than $60. The situation 10 years ago was such that the laborers here were opposed to engaging machinery for farm works but nowadays due to a scarcity of labor, they themselves insist on using them.  Also, there is a scarcity of women labor when it comes to planting works and weeding. Although investments are increasing manifold in sectors such as infrastructure, similar investments are not forthcoming in agriculture and allied sectors, leading to distress in the community of farmers, especially that of the small and marginal segment.  Hence, Bharathi has been helping out such farmers and the families in Thiruvarur by providing them with agricultural loans. Through this project, these agrarian communities of Thiruvarur will benefit socioeconomically.

The loan amount will not only help 62 women purchase seeds, manure and other necessary tools for farming but also reduce dependence on monsoon by helping them invest in other ways of irrigation
